Acquisition of Two Kegs
Once we decided that the avenue we wanted to take was to make our own still, we needed to source the base for this – a keg! Once again we headed to trusty old Gumtree to see what was around. Sure enough we stumbled upon a modified Tooheys keg! This key had been used mainly for beer, but was perfect for our use. There was already a tap at the bottom, and the top had been modified with a screw lid (around 8 inches in diametre). We would need to modify this of course, but it was a great place to start. Despite having to drive an hour to get it, and it being $120, we thought this was well worth it as it was a solid unit with some handy modifications.

But the day wasn’t done! Asi t happened, a good friend of ours told his his Dad had an old Coopers keg he didn’t need. It was an excellent condition, and best of all – it was free! We don’t have any set plans for this yet, it could become a second still, a mash tun, a boiler, or something else. It’s great to have this sitting there ready for when we decide what to do with it.
